January’s World Ski-jump Cup sees the best ski-jumpers in the world and crowds of fans descend on Zakopane. The Polish fans’ enthusiasm is known throughout the world. The fired-up crowd cheer on not only their favourite, Adam Małysz, but the other competitors as well, singing, shouting and trumpeting in a style which has become a symbol of this competition. Foreign jumpers always stress that they love coming to Zakopane, not only because of the amazing atmosphere provided by the fans, but for the most beautifulo ski-jump in the world, as many refer to the Stanisłąw Marusarz Main Jump. It is one of the few natural ski jumps, perfectly embedded into the hillside.
Competitions in traditional skiing also enjoy popularity with annual Gąsieniców run, and the Koziołek Matołek Cup, named after a cartoon character, for younger competitors. Snow has also found fans among polo players. The birthplace of this game is ancient Persia, and although it is normally associated with a grass playing surface, it can also be played on snow. It is quite popular in resorts such as Aspen, Cortina d’Ampezzo or Davos. In 2007 Zakopane joined this list. The first competition took place at the foot of Krupówki, and it attracted throngs of fans. In 2009, famous players from around the world came to take part in the Polo Snow Master Tournament, and emotional and stylish plays were on display everywhere.
